A short walkaround for headlights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lamps and plate lighting.

Lighting is the one maintenance item other drivers depend on, and it is also the easiest to verify. Park facing a wall or garage door at dusk and cycle through low beams, high beams, indicators and hazards using the reflection.
For brake and reverse lamps, a reflection in a shop window or a second person outside the vehicle confirms both sides. Do not forget the license plate lamp, a common inspection failure.
Bulbs dim before they fail. If one side reads noticeably yellower than the other, replace both so the output stays matched, and clean clouded lens housings rather than compensating with brighter bulbs.
